Derby Theatre, as part of the University of Derby, is delighted to announce that planning permission has been granted for its major redevelopment project, marking a significant milestone in the Theatre's vision to transform its facilities and expand opportunities for audiences, artists, learners and communities across Derby.

The approved plans will deliver a substantial extension to the Theatre, including a new purpose-built Studio Theatre and enhanced learning, participation and community spaces. The development forms part of Derby Theatre’s wider capital transformation programme, following the award of £10 million in UK Government funding in 2023.

The new Studio Theatre will provide a flexible and dynamic venue for ambitious new productions, while the additional learning and participation spaces will strengthen Derby Theatre’s work with schools, community groups and emerging artists. Together, the new facilities will enable the Theatre to expand its programme, support more creative talent and welcome even more people through its doors.

As Derby Theatre marks the culmination of its landmark 50th anniversary year, planning approval signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Looking towards the next 50 years and beyond, the development will provide the spaces and opportunities needed to inspire future generations of audiences, artists and learners.

Following planning approval, Derby Theatre will progress the scheme into its next phase, bringing the approved vision to life and creating the facilities needed to support artistic innovation, expand community engagement and strengthen Derby Theatre’s role at the heart of the city’s cultural life.

Sarah Brigham, CEO and Artistic Director of Derby Theatre, said:
“We are delighted that planning permission has been approved for a new building to the rear of Derby Theatre. This is an exciting step forward that will transform what we can offer audiences, artists, learners and participants.

“At the heart of the development will be a new Studio Theatre, creating a dedicated space for us to programme ambitious and exciting new work, alongside new learning and participation spaces that will deepen our connection with communities across Derby.

“Following a hugely successful year of popular produced shows, we know there is a real appetite for work made in Derby. These new spaces will give us even greater opportunities to develop, create and share that work, putting Derby artists and stories centre stage and enabling us to welcome even more people into the theatre.”

Professor Kathryn Mitchell CBE DL, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Derby and Chair of Derby Theatre Board of Trustees, said:

“We are delighted that the planning application for the expansion of Derby Theatre has been approved, marking another important milestone for this transformative project.

“These plans come at an exciting time for both the city and the Theatre as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. This development represents another important contribution from the University of Derby to the city, following the opening of our award-winning Cavendish Building, and reflects our continued commitment to Derby’s cultural and civic life.

“We look forward to working closely with our partners to bring these plans forward and ensure that Derby Theatre continues to thrive for many years to come.”

Planning approval clears the way for the next phase of the project, with Derby Theatre and its partners now progressing detailed design and delivery plans for the development.

The redevelopment has been designed to enhance Derby Theatre’s role as a cultural and civic hub for the city. When complete, the project will provide the facilities needed to grow its artistic programme, deepen community engagement and strengthen its contribution to Derby’s cultural and economic development.
