‘It’s the kind of role that keeps you on your toes every night’

What can you tell us about Murder at Midnight?

Murder at Midnight is a brilliant, brand new gripping murder mystery with a difference, written by acclaimed playwright Torben Betts. Set on New Year’s Eve in a quiet corner of present-day Kent, the story unfolds in a mansion where a killer is in the house. The play is filled with twists, chilling suspense, and wickedly dark humour.

The characters include Jonny ‘The Cyclops’, a notorious gangster, along with his glamorous girlfriend, his trigger-happy sidekick, his mum who’s seeing things, her very jittery carer, a vicar hiding secrets, and a nervous burglar dressed as a clown. When you add in an infamous unsolved murder, you have a razor-sharp blend of wit and suspense. The play proves that even the best-laid plans can unravel spectacularly when the wrong people are in the wrong place at exactly the wrong time!

Which character do you play?

I play Paul, an undercover police officer (who’s dressed as a priest!). He’s been sent in to do some groundwork on Jonny ‘The Cyclops’ a notorious local gangster who’s very much on the police’s radar. Paul is trying to keep his cover intact while gathering intel, which obviously creates some great tension and comedy, especially when things start to spiral out of control.

It’s a brilliant character to get stuck into, especially with so much going on around him. In a fast-paced ensemble piece like this, the energy and timing has to be really sharp. But that’s what makes it exciting – it’s the kind of role that keeps you on your toes every night.

Murder at Midnight is produced by the award-winning Original Theatre whose highly acclaimed production Birdsong you starred in last year – what do you enjoy most about working the company?

Original Theatre has such a strong reputation for producing innovative and captivating shows like Birdsong, Murder in the Dark and the Olivier Award nominated The Time Machine – A Comedy. Having toured as Jack Firebrace in their acclaimed production of Birdsong last year, I’ve seen firsthand how committed they are to quality storytelling and high production values. What I particularly appreciate is their collaborative approach; they really value the cast and crew, which makes for a supportive and creative environment. It’s exciting to be part of a company that consistently pushes boundaries and brings fresh, engaging theatre to audiences.

There are some fantastic fellow TV and stage actors involved – what is it like working with them?

It’s been an absolute joy working with director Philip Frank. He brings such clarity and creativity to the rehearsal room, and his sense of storytelling is second to none. He really knows how to bring out the best in everyone and has created a space where the whole cast can thrive.

But honestly, it’s the ensemble as a whole that makes this production so special. Every single person on that stage brings something unique, and the chemistry we’ve built really shines through. It’s been such a collaborative process, and I think audiences will feel that sense of fun and connection in every performance.

Do you enjoy the touring life?

Absolutely, aside from missing family and friends I really do. There’s something exciting about taking a show on the road and sharing it with new audiences in different places every night. Each venue has its own energy, which keeps the performance fresh. It’s also a great opportunity to explore new towns and cities, meet people from all walks of life, and build great camaraderie and strong bonds with the cast and crew. Of course, it can be demanding at times, but that sense of adventure and the joy of performing make it incredibly rewarding.

What was the initial instigator for you becoming an actor?

When I was around 10, my mum took me to a Saturday drama class in Addlestone, not far from where we lived. I think she quickly spotted that I had a bit of a knack for it – and from that point on, I wasn’t really allowed to do anything else! My dad worked in TV, so he was initially a bit resistant to the idea of me pursuing it professionally knowing firsthand how tough the industry can be. However, he has been so supportive alongside my mum, who was keen on the idea from the outset.  I think a part of her had wanted to do it herself when she was younger.

How do you relax away from acting?

I really enjoy spending time outdoors – whether that’s relaxing in the garden, playing a round of golf, or simply getting out into nature and exploring local landmarks whilst on tour. When I’m at home, I like catching up on films, from the latest releases to old military classics. I’ve always had a strong interest in history, and I enjoy diving into books and films on the subject. And when I get the chance, there’s nothing better than a Sunday roast or a barbecue with my family – especially when I can squeeze it in between tour dates!
