Inclusive, creative and fun, Ruff n Ready is an exciting new series of monthly workshops for people who love or can't stand Shakespeare, people who get a buzz or shy away from doing new things, and everyone in between.

Each month, we will gather to do something creative together – an activity based on Shakespeare’s plays or poems – such as craft, writing, stage fighting, or even a bit of dance!

You do not have to be an expert at anything, or have had any previous experience of any of the activities.

We just want you to enjoy yourself in fabulous company as you connect with your own creativity and with each other.

Come as you are, in the spirit of rough and ready – we are not interested in posh or perfection.

Each workshop is BSL interpreted and runs from 6pm to 8pm.

What Can I Expect?

Exploring Shakespeare in BSL — With Charlotte Arrowsmith

We’re delighted to welcome Charlotte Arrowsmith to lead our next session!

Charlotte made history as the first Deaf actor to perform on the main stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and has since played a variety of compelling Shakespearean roles — including Lady Macduff at Leeds Playhouse.

Her influence in Deaf-led theatre continues to grow. Just last year, she co-directed Antony and Cleopatra at Shakespeare’s Globe, where Deaf actor Nadia Nadarajah took on the role of Cleopatra. Charlotte also recently worked as BSL consultant on Midsummer Mayhem, an exciting collaboration between 1623 Theatre Company and Wrestling Resurgence.

Following the enthusiasm from our first session — where participants expressed a keen interest in how Shakespeare can be translated and performed in British Sign Language (BSL) — we knew Charlotte would be the perfect person to take things further.

With her extensive experience and passion for inclusive performance, Charlotte is not only a pioneering artist but also a fantastic facilitator. We’re truly excited to have her on board!
