These craft sessions are designed for refugees, sanctuary and asylum seekers and will run almost every Thursday, 10:00am – 2:00pm at Derby Theatre. Free refreshments will be provided. There will be a new topic every 2 sessions, you can see an outline for August and September below.

Steps towards tomorrow – 27 August & 3 September 2026
In this hands-on workshop, participants will design, build, and paint wearable footwear using upcycled paper, card, and non-toxic paints. The process of shoemaking serves as a creative metaphor for resilience, turning discarded materials into inspiring symbols of dignity and personal growth. Each shoe will also feature a message written to your future self, capturing your goals and hopes for the journey ahead.
Delivered across two 3-to-4-hour sessions, this experience offers a warm, reflective space to craft something deeply meaningful.
Silhouette Painting – 10 September & 17 September 2026
In this engaging two-part workshop, participants use high-contrast lighting to trace their silhouette profiles onto upcycled paper and cardboard. You will then fill the surrounding space with a vibrant collage of words and images that reflect your inner strengths, vulnerabilities, and authentic identity.
By contrasting a stark silhouette with a rich, textured background, the session explores the relationship between how the world sees us and who we truly are inside.
Delivered across two 3-to-4-hour sessions, this experience provides a welcoming, reflective space for meaningful self-expression.
