Design Futures: Carbon Literacy Training for Theatre Designers and their Associates

Thu 11 Jul, 2024 Archive
This one day course is specifically tailored to the needs of theatre designers and their collaborators, with a focus on freelance artistic practice and decision making processes.

It will help you become knowledgeable and confident about sustainable practice both in the studio and in production, and reveal the creative possibilities of working more sustainably. It is an essential part of meeting Theatre Green Book standards for production and is a great introduction to thinking about sustainability in creative practice.

This Carbon Literacy Training is run by members of The Society of British Theatre Designers; a supportive, intergenerational community of practice and shared knowledge from across the country. SBTD is run by, and for designers, at every stage of their careers – student, graduate, professional or retired designer.

The training is broken into 2 sessions:

The first session is 2 hours online and is undertaken in your own time.

**You will need to complete this prior to the in-person session so please ensure you have time to do this – we’ll send out the material 2 weeks before the course start date and again a few days before the start**

-The second 6 hour session is delivered in person as part of a group.

We also provide additional resources for wider reading and exploration.

At the end of the course you will need to fill out a form demonstrating your understanding of what we need to do to reach Zero Carbon, and pledging Actions you’ll take for yourself and the industry to help with this. You need to send the form back to your facilitator within a week of completing the in person session. You’ll then receive a certification of Carbon Literacy from the Carbon Literacy Project and you’ll become part of a supportive network of carbon literate theatre professionals making change in the industry.

The training covers:

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Setting the scene, explaining key facts, and considering where theatre production sits in the global climate crisis.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT US? Thinking more specifically about how we (locally) and as an industry are being and will be affected by climate crisis, and our responsibilities, including around climate justice.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? Examples of solutions and best practice on a local and national level, and interactive activities around carbon calculation, green mapping, and gaining confidence in climate discourse.

DESIGN FUTURES. Practical exercises to encourage creative responses to the challenges of designing sustainably, and blue sky thinking around the future we want to see for theatre and the important role we can play.

This training is specifically for professional designers for performance of all types, plus those who work closely with designers as part of the creative and production team– directors, creative workshop teams, costume supervisors, production managers etc. Design educators and design students who have an understanding of the design process and have undertaken several speculative or realised projects on a BA or MA or related higher education course are also encouraged.

Accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project.

If you have any access requirements please contact us prior to the course starting so we can ensure we are meeting your needs.
