Spitfire Girls

Inspired by remarkable true events

Tue 8 - Sat 12 Apr, 2025 Archive
“It’s built for us, isn’t it? The Spitfire. Built for women.”

New Year’s Eve, 1959.

Decades after answering the call, two women separated by the war meet again as the rain hammers down on the windows of The Spitfire pub.

As we hear their story, we’re transported back to a time when female pioneers defied expectations and soared through the skies.

Spitfire Girls is inspired by the extraordinary true stories of the women who dared to fly during WWII and the incredible bond that tied them together.

Funny and heart-warming, this is an untold story of strength, courage and loss. But above all else, hope.

Spitfire Girls was developed with the support of the National Theatre’s Generate programme.

Join Us for an Exclusive Post-Show Q&A!

Join us after Spitfire Girls on Tue 8 April for a special post-show Q&A with Wirksworth-based author Shirley Mann, hosted in the auditorium.
Shirley specialises in novels about women in WWII, including Bobby’s War – her award-winning second book about an ATA pilot, inspired by interviews with real-life pilot Mary Ellis. She’s currently preparing to publish her fifth novel and writing her sixth, both continuing to shine a light on remarkable women’s wartime stories.
Stick around after the show to hear more about Shirley’s work, the real-life inspirations behind Spitfire Girls, and – most intriguingly – find out what ATA female pilots learned not to do!
T&Cs: You must have a ticket to attend the show on Tue 8 April.
