The misty hills of the Derbyshire moors. Nine stones stand in a circle. A tenth looms higher up the hill - The King Stone.

“I reckon you’re Jupiter and I’m Saturn, and every now again you over take my orbit and we have this amazing conjunction”

Bonded in their search for a mysterious figure said to wander the Peaks, Kristen and Phil meet nearly every Sunday at The Nine Ladies stone circle. Throughout Scouts and school and the growing pains of adulthood, the mismatched pair are forever in each other’s orbit.

But as secrets are revealed their bond begins to fray and the figure they’ve been searching for waits within the shadows. Growing up in a town where ‘Man-Up’ is deemed a term of endearment, can this star-crossed pair remain connected and break free of others’ expectations?

The King Stone was developed with the support of the National Theatre’s Generate programme and with support from Nottingham Playhouse, Mansfield Palace and Curve Leicester.

Pre Show Creative Workshop

This workshop with Dani Bello at 5:00PM offers a calm, supportive space to slow down, ground, and reconnect. Participants will create a personal grounding stone — a tactile object designed to support calm and presence — while exploring creativity as a way to settle the nervous system and reconnect with the body. The workshop encourages reflection and self-connection without pressure to share or explain experiences.
Suitable for adults and young people, this session is designed to feel accessible, inclusive, and safe. No previous art experience is required.

Post-Show Q&A

After the performance of The King Stone, audiences are invited to stay for a Q&A with members of the creative team and local mental health practitioners, exploring the themes of the show and the work happening in the community to support mental wellbeing.

Meet the Q&A Panel:

Host – Dani Bello, Art Therapist

Panellist – Charlotte East, Writer

Panellist – Alex Harrison, CEO of Tough Enough to Care

Panellist – Jas Mann, Recovery Connector & Mentor – Al-Hurraya (Derby)
