Two vibrant community hubs are currently active in Normanton and Stockbrook, hosting monthly events and workshops in accessible, welcoming spaces on people’s doorsteps. Funded by the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities programme, DT Communities empowers Derby residents to spotlight the arts and cultural events, talks and workshops that matter most to them. Most importantly, it brings people together to connect over shared interests and life experiences. There is an exciting round-up of events for Autumn, with more to come.
In October, celebrations begin with Rang De Diwali at the Ambedkar Community Centre on Saturday 18 October. This vibrant Festival of Light, organised by community member Jyoti Sahu with support from DT Communities, offers an afternoon of live music, children’s entertainment, fireworks and a free dinner by Nallas Restaurant. Visitors can enjoy henna painting, face painting, street food by Chandra’s Chai and browse local stalls. Headlining the event will be community favourites Jin & Seetal, performing live with a band and DJ set, making it a lively and unmissable community celebration.
Later in the month, on Saturday 25 October, Connect & Create: Winging It takes place at Normanton Library. This free workshop offers a relaxed, creative self-discovery meet-up hosted by Smashed Avocado Productions, inspired by their new play Spare Goose. Participants are invited to ice biscuits, make masks and explore what they show and what they hide, while meeting new people in a warm and welcoming setting.
In November, the Normanton Steering Group presents United Colours of Derby: A Cultural Showcase on Sunday 2 November at Normanton Library. This community-led event celebrates the people who make the city bright and vibrant, with a catwalk and live performances from 10 local acts. From hip hop culture to 1960s fashion and traditional cultural heritage clothing, the event is a colourful celebration of local talent, culture and style, accompanied by music, dance and refreshments.
December sees the return of acclaimed theatre company This Is My Theatre with their festive production of A Christmas Carol. Audiences can enjoy this classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s redemption at Normanton Library on Friday 5 December and at St. Luke’s Church on Wednesday 17 December. This one-act adaptation is filled with charm, cheer and carols, promising to bring festive warmth to audiences in two welcoming community spaces.
In January, the season continues with Beat the Blues at St. Luke’s Church on Saturday 24 January. This popular event returns to lift spirits during the winter months with an uplifting line-up of acts, helping audiences shake off the January blues and come together to celebrate community through performance.
DT Communities events are shaped by the people of Derby and continue to receive positive feedback from participants and audiences alike. As one steering group member reflected: “We as the people of Derby have had opportunity both paid and unpaid to bring our ideas to life. That’s making the locals feel more involved than EVER.”
Another participant added: “The locations have been accessible and suited to the activity. Workshops have been free or priced at an extremely low cost making them inviting to all ages and affordable to people on different incomes. I feel you have created connections using the arts to bring people together, to entertain, care and inspire participants of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.”
This autumn season demonstrates the wide variety of events made possible when communities lead the way – from cultural festivals and creative workshops to theatre productions and showcases of local talent. With ease and access at its heart, DT Communities continues to bring people together, celebrate diversity and create opportunities for connection, learning and joy.
