Young People

Alice in Wonderland (Young Company) Auditions

Derby Theatre is looking for local young people, aged 9-16, to be in their professional production of Alice in Wonderland this summer, a new version by Nicola Werenowska based on Lewis Carroll’s classic story.

On Saturday 13 April, group auditions will be held for deaf and hearing young people who are interested in appearing in the production, which will run in the Main House at Derby Theatre from Saturday 22 June until Saturday 6 July, 2024.

For those young people who are successful in securing an audition slot, they will take part in a range of drama exercises and games and be asked to sing in a group. Previous experience in performing is not essential.

Please wear comfortable clothes and footwear and bring along a bottle of water for refreshment. We are looking for three teams of six young actors, aged between 9 and 16, to play a range of roles. Each team will perform on different dates during the run.

  • Audition slots will be available to book online from 12pm on Friday 22 March or by calling the Derby Theatre Box Office on 01332 593939. PLEASE NOTE: interest in audition opportunities is always very high and slots will be available to book on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • Please carefully read KEY INFORMATION, REHEARSALS and KEY DATES information below.

  • Auditions will be held on Saturday 13 April from 10am.
  • Auditions are open to young people who live at an address with a Derby or Derbyshire postcode.
  • On booking a slot, you will then be sent a form (by our Arts Administrator, Beth); to be completed by you and returned to Beth within 48 hours of receiving the form. Your place will NOT be confirmed until Beth has received your completed form and we have confirmed this back with you. Failure to complete and submit the form within the allocated time will result in you losing your slot. The application form will be sent to anyone who follows the official booking process (and providing a slot is available). Please make sure to use an email address that you can access when booking your place, as this is where your young person’s application will be sent.
  • For those wishing to audition, who are at the younger and older ends of the scale (i.e. not yet 9 or still 16), as long as you are 9 by the time rehearsals start (on Monday 20 May), or are still 16 by Saturday 6 July, you are still permitted to audition.

For those who are offered a place as part of the audition process, the main rehearsals, with the professional company of actors, will start during week commencing Monday 20 May, and each team of young actors will be required to rehearse twice a week on a Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm until 8pm. You will also be needed on Saturday 8 June from 10am – 1pm and Saturday 15 June from 10am – 1pm. Additional rehearsals may take place as the production nears to opening. All young company members will NEED to be available throughout tech week (w/c Mon 17 June) and for the whole run of the show, from Saturday 22 June – Saturday 6 July. (We will support with performance licences for the young company).
