John Booker is a writer originally from Coventry, now based in Derby. A graduate of The Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, John’s work draws deeply from his Jamaican heritage and working-class roots.

He was commissioned by Paines Plough for their acclaimed Come To Where I’m From series and later performed the piece live at Derby Loves You.

His first play Old Coke received a rehearsed reading commissioned by Middle Child Theatre, and his play Bwoy Dem won the 2021 Take Off Award with In Good Company, Derby Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse and the Arena Theatre, supported by Arts Council England. John developed the piece with director Angharad Jones (New Perspectives) and it went on to be performed at Derby Theatre, Lincoln Arts Centre and as part of the Departure Lounge Festival.

John has been commissioned and supported by Derby Theatre, The Bush Theatre, Fifth Word, Middle Child, and In Good Company. He is currently under commission with Fifth Word Theatre Company and developing a co-created piece about the Black mining community in the East Midlands, commissioned by Derby Theatre.

John was an Associate Artist at New Perspectives Theatre, he’s a member of the Royal Court Writers Group, and was longlisted for the BBC Writers Academy (22/23).

His new play LAD, directed by Daniel Bailey and produced by Fifth Word opens on the end of March (22nd-30th) in Derby & Leicester.
