Michael Lunney is the British/Irish Artistic Director/Producer/Actor/Designer/Writer at Middle Ground Theatre Co Ltd and has been since its inauguration in 1988. He has produced/directed/acted/designed/written over eighty UK/Eire theatre production tours, playing the likes of Bath Theatre Royal, The Gaiety Dublin, The Mayflower, Southampton, Grand Opera House, Belfast, Nottingham Theatre Royal, The Olympia Dublin, Plymouth Theatre Royal, His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen, Oxford Playhouse, Cambridge Arts Theatre, Brighton Theatre Royal, Lime Tree Theatre, Limerick, Norwich Theatre Royal, Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford, Malvern Theatres, Theatr Clwyd Mold, Theatre Royal York, Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, New Theatre, Cardiff, Jersey Opera House, Castlebar Theatre Royal, Co Mayo, Northampton Theatre Royal, Windsor Theatre Royal, Salisbury Playhouse and Kings Theatre, Edinburgh to name but a few.
He also produced charitable performances of “Meeting Joe Strummer” at The Arts Theatre, West End in 2007.
He has worked over the last four decades with hundreds of gifted actors from the UK/USA/Europe and beyond including Golden Globe and Bafta Best Actress Nominee Kelly McGillis, TIFF Life Time Achievement Winner and RSC/National Theatre Leading Man/Hollywood and British Film star Richard Johnson, Olivier Award Winner and Bafta Best Actor Nominee Jack Shepherd (3 plays), Bafta Best Actor Nominee Tony Britton (3 plays), Bafta Best Actress Nominee Judy Cornwell, Multi Golden Globe Best Actress Nominee Stephanie Powers, National Society Of Film Critics Best Actor Nominee Barry Foster along with Dirk Benedict, Philip Madoc, Louise Jameson, George Sewell, Lewis Collins, Diane Fletcher, Gareth Thomas, Sarah Hadland, Dermot Walsh ( 3 plays), Colin Baker, Sally Thomsett, Jason Merrells, Denis Lill, Ian Kelsey, Terrence Hardiman, Glyn Owen, Stephen McGann, Helen Fraser, Brian Cant, Patrick Robinson, Faye Tozer and Hildegard Neil to name but a few.
He is a published playwright (nom de plume Margaret May Hobbs – his maternal grandmother’s name) with his adaptation of Barry Reed’s classic novel “THE VERDICT” published by Josef Weinbergers in 2017.As well as three UK/Eire tours of The Verdict by Middle Ground, there have been productions in Mumbai and Athens with further productions scheduled for Calgary and Poland in 2026. His first original play “Dial M For Mayhem” will be published by Music Theatre International (incorporating Josef Weinberger Ltd) in early 2026.

He lives in Malvern, Worcestershire with his partner Lynette and their two children Bethany and Patrick along with family dogs- Biscuit and Lucy.
