Each month, we will gather to do something creative together – an activity based on Shakespeare’s plays or poems – such as craft, writing, stage fighting, or even a bit of dance!
You do not have to be an expert at anything, or have had any previous experience of any of the activities.
We just want you to enjoy yourself in fabulous company as you connect with your own creativity and with each other.
Come as you are, in the spirit of rough and ready – we are not interested in posh or perfection.
First session will be run by 1623 artistic director Ben Spiller and Derby-based crafter Rhona Sheraton. Ben and Rhona will guide you through the process of designing and making your very own ruff – the fancy collar worn by people in Shakespeare’s time.
If you’re joining us IN PERSON at Derby Theatre, there’s no need to bring anything – we’ll provide everything you need, including:
- Paper, pencils, and colouring supplies to design your ruff
- Fabric, scissors, sewing needles, and cotton thread to make it
- Beads, jewels, and sequins for embellishment
You’re welcome to bring your own materials too, if you’d prefer.

1623 will plan future sessions of Ruff n Ready with you, so you get a say in what activities take place.
Each workshop is BSL interpreted and runs from 6pm to 8pm, and we ask for a small contribution of £5 to help cover room hire and materials.
Tue 6 May will be BSL interpreted by Max Marchewicz.
All future workshops BSL interpreted by Kathryn Pearson.
