Working Creatively with People Living With Dementia

Fri 19 May, 2023
For Dementia Action Week and Creativity and Wellbeing Week, Derby Theatre are offering artists and creative facilitators the opportunity to attend a free day of training, to explore how creativity and imagination can be used to deliver person-centred, inclusive workshops for people living with dementia.

The training will be delivered by theatre practitioner Nicky Bellenger, who has over 13 years experience of working with people living with dementia, and is a Dementia Friends Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society.

You will:

  • Gain an understanding of how dementia affects people
  • Learn about the values of creativity in enabling people to flourish, communicate effectively and express themselves fully
  • Explore methods of co-creation with people living with dementia
  • Take away ideas and exercises to apply to your own creative practice

There will also be the opportunity to reflect on how this training can be applied to working more broadly with older adults, people living with other long-term health conditions, and carers.

This workshop is funded by Arts Council England, as part of a project that will result in a new youth theatre play about dementia, written by Nicky Bellenger and co-created with people living with dementia, their carers and 11-15 year-olds.

If you would like more information about the play, please contact Stuart Allen, Senior Producer at S.Allen@derby.ac.uk
