The Mid-Career Commission (MCC) is an element of the In Good Company programme designed to support theatre makers and companies with an established practice, identity and a strong track record of creating contemporary theatre; an artist or company who has made 2 to 3 shows.
Earshot is a reimagined black comedy by Morris Panych which tells the story of a man with Hyperacusis, a darkly comic production which is a fully accessible feast using Creative Captions, Projection and Visual Foley.
Through the mid-career commission, Hot Coals will receive a commission fee of £5000, 2 weeks’ rehearsal space at one or two of the IGC partner venues, the potential to perform the piece at the Departure Lounge festival at Derby Theatre, plus mentorship from the IGC Creative Producer and support from the partner venues.
Clare-Louise English and Jo Sargeant (Hot Coals Productions) said:
“The In Good Company mid-career commission has provided us with an unbelievable opportunity to develop our most ambitious production to date, with the incredible support of the In Good Company team.
The commission will allow us to develop a reimagined dark comedy, which incorporates Creative Captions, Projection and Visual Foley.
As budgets become tighter, and the industry continuously faces new hurdles, we are proud to offer a fully accessible piece of theatre that will tour to theatres around the UK.”
Emily Coleman and Natalie Chan (In Good Company) said:
“In Good Company have long recognised the need to meaningfully support mid-career artists, those in need of increased financial investment in order to step up in their theatre-making practice. We were blown away by the quality and calibre of applications we received, and grateful to the time and care from all artists. Hot Coals’ innovative use of technology and commitment to access with Earshot really stood out to us and we are really excited to supporting their next chapter.”
Hot Coals are currently looking to gauge interest in Earshot with venues across the Midlands and beyond. For more information and programming enquiries, please contact Natalie Chan from In Good Company at n.chan@derby.ac.uk.
In Good Company will soon also announce the second recipient of the mid-career commission.
