Spare Goose Connect & Create comes to Derby Theatre

Published Tuesday 7th Oct 2025
Smashed Avocado Productions is connecting women in Derby through creativity.

A free session set to send participants on a journey of self-discovery through creative making is designed to spark new friendships in a generation of women isolated through changes in modern living.

Inspired by her play Spare Goose, Midlands playwright Danica Corns, is behind the initiative which will run at Normanton Library on Saturday 25 October. With the script still under development, thanks to Arts Council England funding, the play explores the theme of changing friendships as the characters reach milestones at different speeds and their lives begin to fall out of step.

Danica says: “Women are suddenly finding themselves alone in their 30s. Friends move away, get married and start families, while socialising at work has all but disappeared. These changes aren’t bad or even that unexpected, but as we grow and move on it’s easy to become isolated. Meeting new people is logistically hard work and socially awkward.

The Spare Goose Connect & Create sessions are an opportunity for women from any generation to have some fun and bond with others over a common creative interest. Maybe they’ll even find a theatre buddy to catch the next new play with.”

The session itself promises sweet compliments in the form of iced cookies and a mask-making session that explores what we show and what we hide. Connect & Create: Winging it is free to attend, book via  derbytheatre.co.uk/connect-create-winging-it

Smashed Avocado Productions are working with DT Communities, Derby Theatre’s vibrant community programme, led by the people of Derby, for the people of Derby, and shaped by the inspiring voices of the local community. Two vibrant community hubs are currently active in Normanton and Stockbrook, hosting monthly events and workshops in accessible, welcoming spaces on people’s doorsteps. Funded by the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities programme, DT Communities empowers Derby residents to spotlight the arts and cultural events, talks and workshops that matter most to them. Most importantly, it brings people together to connect over shared interests and life experiences. There is an exciting round-up of events for Autumn, with more to come.

The session is open to anyone 18 and over who identifies as a woman. 11am-1pm, Saturday 25 October, Normanton Library.
