Fergal will talk to BBC Midlands Correspondent, Navtej Johal, about his career and his plans for the future including writing his first novel and a new work of non-fiction.

Fergal Keane’s departure from the BBC after 37 years rightly deserved a mention on the 6 o’clock bulletin as one of the most recognisable and respected journalists in world affairs, reporting with humanity and empathy and winning multiple awards.

He covered conflict and brutality across the world: from Rwanda, Sudan, South Africa, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and more recently in Ukraine and Gaza, demonstrating his ability to connect with audiences and powerfully and compassionately tell the stories of the people and places impacted by war and destruction.

But all this time he struggled not to be overwhelmed by another story, his acute ‘complex post-traumatic stress disorder’. This condition has caused him to suffer a number of mental breakdowns and hospitalisations. Despite this he continued to go back to the wars again and again.
